1 ) Unit Profile


1.1 ) Briefly describe the program-level planning unit. What is the unit's purpose and function?

Healthcare Interpreting Chair, Faculty, Program Staff. The unit's purpose and function:

  • Ensure a program that prepares students to enter the Healthcare Interpreting Profession or related field
  • Implement equitable educational strategies and adapt proven approaches to teaching interpreting skills with culturally responsive methodologies
  • Match curriculum to professional scope and industry standards
  • Focused recruiting
  • Evaluate program efficiency and effectiveness, and address them
  • Assemble an Advisory Committee including industry experts, employers, professional interpreters, consumers/providers of language access services, past/current students


1.2 ) How does the unit contribute to achievement of the mission of American River College?

The unit performs focused recruiting and outreach activities. Historical data show that the majority of students who enroll in the program are DI students including Hispanic/Latino students, English language learners, and students with economically disadvantaged families, these data guide unit planning and activities to incorporate inclusive, equitable education. The unit engages in continuing education. We partner to complete activities with other departments within ARC to expose students to other disciplines and services. We partner with employers for internships/externships and schedule a panel to allow students to learn about employers in the area.
